Covid-19 vaccination for children aged 12 to 17

The Covid-19 vaccine is now being made available to anyone over the age of 12. This page explains the vaccine offer in Kent and Medway for young people under 18-years-old.

Please note that the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has recommended new guidelines for vaccination of young people under the age of 18 following Covid-19 infection.

Children aged 12 to 18 years will need to wait for 12 weeks following a positive test for Covid-19 before having their vaccination.

This is because there is a small increase in the risk of side-effects.

The risk of serious side-effects if your child has already been vaccinated is very small. If you are concerned please call NHS 111.

National information is available on the GOV.uk website

Please use the drop-down menus below for more information on the specific age groups and parental consent.

Parental consent for 12 to 15-year-olds

Parental consent will always be requested before any child aged 12 to 15 is given the Covid-19 vaccination – in line with NHS rules. No vaccinations will take place without asking for parental consent.

There are exceptional circumstances where, if a child and parent/guardian have different opinions, the child can request for a medical professional to assess their capacity to consent to the vaccination themselves (this is known as Gillick competency).

Consent forms may come through schools but it is the responsibility of the NHS to ensure consent is in place before vaccination happens.

16-year-olds and over

Parental consent is not required for those aged 16 and over who wish to receive the Covid-19 vaccination.

These rules are in line with the normal NHS guidance on parental consent.

The vaccination offer for 12 to 15-year-olds (with no specific clinically vulnerable risk factors) has been expanded to offer 12 to 15-year-olds a choice in how they have their vaccination.

In school clincs

In school clinics will be run by the NHS schools immunisation services. Clinics will be run on school sites, but co-ordination of parental consent and timing of clinics is the responsibility of the NHS.

Out-of-school clinics (bookable)

If your child missed their Covid-19 vaccination at school, or the NHS Immunisation Team has yet to visit your child’s school, you can now use the national booking system to book your child into a site in the local community.

It’s quick and easy and will show you the closest place to you with available appointments. There are lots of options throughout Kent and Medway. Even if you have already filled in the consent form to have your child vaccinated at school, you can still use the national booking service if it’s easier for you.

Out-of school clinics (walk-in)

There are a number of walk-in clinics for 12 to 15-year-olds taking place across Kent and Medway. No booking is neccessary for these clinics, you can just turn up.

Not all Covid-19 vaccination clinics are suitable for 12 to 15-year-olds, please check before going. Details of walk-in clinics available for 12 to 15-year-olds can be found further down this page or at the national Grab A Jab website.

Parents or guardians must attend with 12 to 15-year-olds, to be able to give their consent.

Please do not contact GP surgeries or other vaccine services directly about booking appointments

Information will be shared with pupils and parents through schools.

There is more information about the vaccination offer to 12 to 15-year-olds on the GOV.uk website

The vaccine offered to 12 to 15-year-olds will be one dose of the Pfizer vaccine.

GPs are inviting at-risk children aged between 12 and 15-years-old, who are clinically vulnerable to Covid-19 or live with adults who are at increased risk of serious illness from the virus, to have their vaccine.

A full list of the medical conditions that are considered to put 12 to 15-year-olds at greater risk is on the national webpage for vaccine information for children and young people.

The Covid-19 vaccine will also be offered to children aged 12 and over, who live with someone who is immunosuppressed, such as those receiving chemotherapy or who have had a transplant.

For vulnerable young people the vaccination offer is two doses of the Pfizer vaccine; given eight weeks apart.

Anyone who aged 16 or over is now able to book on the national booking service (NBS).

From 22 November 2021, 16 to 17-year-olds will be able to book their second dose, as long as its been at least twelve weeks since their first, or 12 weeks since they've had Covid-19

If a site in Kent and Medway does not appear when you try to book online, it means all current slots are taken, but more are regularly added. Please check back later. You should not need to travel outside of Kent and Medway to have a vaccination.

All 16 and 17-year-olds can use a local vaccination walk-in service, or via an appointment with your GP. The vaccination being offered is one dose of the Pfizer vaccine.

There are walk-in clinics taking place throughout Kent and Medway. Not all walk-in clinics are able to give the vaccine to under 18s, please refer to the map and the list below for your closest clinic.

16 and 17-year-olds can provide consent themselves and do not need parental consent.

There is a range of vaccination services open across Kent and Medway for 12 to 15-year-olds. More may follow in later stages of the vaccination programme.

All bookings for these services must be through the national Covid-19 vaccine booking service.

If a site does not appear at the time of booking, all available time slots may be full, please check back again later for new slots opening.
