Innovative care results in parliamentary award winners in Kent and Medway

13 June 2022

Caring for patients at home, and people with cancer, reducing falls, and managing bed capacity – innovative work in these areas has resulted in four Kent and Medway winners in the South East region of the NHS Parliamentary awards.

The Home Visiting Service and Complex Acute Response Team has been selected as a regional winner in the Excellence in Primary Care and Community Care category.

Nominated by MP Roger Gale, the team cares for patients in their own homes and care homes – these patients are unable to visit their GP and are at risk of being admitted to hospital due to their complex needs.

Since January 2021, the team has provided packages of care for more than 5,500 patients – the majority of these would have previously been admitted to hospital.

The Cancer Services Team at Medway NHS Foundation Trust has been selected as a regional winner in the Excellence in Healthcare category.

Nominated by MP Rehman Chishti, the hard work of the Cancer Services Team has resulted in the achievement of the national constitutional targets for the first time in more than two years. The trust also achieved the national standard in four key areas of cancer care for the first time in its history.

The nursing team on Deal Ward at Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital, Margate has been selected as a regional winner in the Nursing and Midwifery category.

Nominated by MP Roger Gale, the nurses on Deal Ward have significantly reduced the number of patient falls and medical emergency calls, thanks to improvement initiatives designed and led by them.

Stacey Perry, Deal Ward Manager, brought together nurses and therapists to understand why patients were falling and to identify what more they could do to prevent patients from deteriorating, triggering medical emergency calls. As a result, there has been a sustained 50 per cent reduction in falls over the past year.

Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust’s (MTW) Care Coordination Centre Team has been selected as a regional winner in the Future NHS category.

Nominated by MP Greg Clark, the Care Coordination Centre Team introduced an automated bed management system that has provided MTW with the ability to manage its patient flow more effectively, significantly improve its bed turnaround times and provide patients with the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

The national winners will be announced on Wednesday, 6 July.

The NHS Parliamentary Awards 2022 South East regional winners are published on the NHS Parliamentary awards website.
