New home for Canterbury Medical Practice

11 March 2021

A state‐of‐the‐art medical practice has opened in Canterbury, offering patients improved and modern facilities.

Canterbury Medical Practice has moved into purpose‐built premises on Ethelbert Road, next to Kent and Canterbury Hospital, to offer improved and modern facilities for future care.

The practice previously operated from outdated premises in Cossington House and London Road.

The new two‐storey building has 11 consulting rooms, four treatment rooms and an enhanced treatment room as well as improved design for disabled access, patient confidentiality, and infection control.

More accessible for patients

Emma Ray, Executive Manager at Canterbury Medical Practice, said: “It’s so exciting for us to finally be able to move into the new building. Our old surgeries were lovely old buildings but presented many challenges, such as accessibility with their steep staircases, and are no longer considered suitable for the delivery of the modern healthcare services our patients’ need and deserve. We look forward to welcoming our patients to our lovely new premises over the coming months and years.”

The new surgery will provide much needed additional capacity to help meet the needs of Canterbury’s expanding population; provide an opportunity to extend the range of patient services available in the community and has been designed and built to meet the latest environmental standards.

'A priority scheme comes to fruition'

Bill Millar, Director of Primary Care at NHS Kent and Medway Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “This excellent new facility will enable practice staff to provide quality health care in purpose‐built surroundings. This has been a priority scheme for several years and we are delighted to see it come to fruition”.

The development is one of a number of new-build GP premises projects in the country to have received capital funding from NHS England’s Estates and Technology Transformation Fund (ETTF).

Sam Callow, Development Manager at Assura, said: “It’s always an exciting and rewarding time when we complete a new medical centre. It has been a long development process, but the new building will be a big asset to both GPs and the community in Canterbury. The new centre is far more suitable to the needs of the local community and will allow the GPs to provide additional services to patients.”
